Dicsograms

A discogram is an x-ray examination of the intervertebral discs. This test is used to determine which disk is damaged and if surgery is necessary. The test is performed by injecting dye into the center of the disk. The dye makes the disk clearly visible on X-ray film and a fluoroscope screen. This test is better than an x-ray or myelogram for determining if there is a tear in the disk. The dye helps the physician make an accurate diagnosis. A simple x-ray shows only the bony structures and their alignment, and a myelogram is best for assessing the spinal canal.

With a discogram, you will be given medication to help you relax, then a local anesthetic. The procedure usually lasts about 40 minutes.
